A Complete Guide to Product Registration in Dubai

A Complete Guide to Product Registration in Dubai

As a measure to curb the circulation of counterfeit products and ensure consumer safety, the UAE government has made it mandatory for businesses to register their products. This is a key requirement for businesses throughout the UAE, and if not complied with can have hefty penalties. Product registration in Dubai, and across the UAE is a simple process, involving the submission of certain documents and following certain procedures. Let’s explore this process in detail.

Who Must Register Their Products in Dubai?

Manufacturers

If you are a manufacturer, you must ensure that you register your products before exporting or selling/distributing.

Importers

If your business involves the import of foreign products, it is necessary to register these products.

It is necessary to note that both free zone and mainland companies must comply with the established regulations regarding product registration.

What Products Must Be Registered in Dubai?

Almost every product slated for manufacture, import, or export must be registered. This is applicable for products across segments such as F&B, healthcare, textile, personal care, and so on. It is crucial to note that products in all sizes, packaging, and quantities must be registered. As an example, a product that is available in quantities of 100g and 500g must be registered separately for each quantity.

Where Can You Apply for Product Registration in Dubai?

You must register the products with Dubai Municipality, which is the competent authority overseeing the registration of products in Dubai. Similarly, product registrations in other Emirates must be done with their respective municipalities. Besides overseeing registrations, the municipalities conduct quality testing and inspections for products. One must bear in mind that prior to registration, it may be necessary to obtain an external approval from the relevant government body. For instance, products like dietary supplements and pharmaceuticals may require the approval of the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP).

Documents Required for Product Registration in Dubai

Following is the list of main documents that are required:

  • Registration application
  • Trade license
  • Label assessment copy

In addition to the aforementioned documents, you may be required to submit additional documents such as the ingredients report, product images, and so on. You may also be required to submit samples of your product. This is, however, subject to the product in question.

Process of Product Registration in Dubai

Through the following simple steps, you can complete the registration process for your product(s):

  1. Visit the Dubai Municipality website
  2. Fill out the registration application form with the necessary details
  3. Pay the required fee
  4. Submit the necessary documents
  5. Your application will be reviewed
  6. Once approved, you will be issued a registration certificate
  7. In case any objections arise, you may be required to provide additional documents

Product Registration Certificate

The certificate of registration once issued is valid for a period of 5 years. This legal document serves as proof of your compliance with the health and safety standards adopted by the government. You may be required to produce this certificate for purposes like customs clearances.

Certificate Renewals and Other Obligations

The product registration certificate must be periodically renewed. Also, any changes in the registered product must be duly reported. This may require you to submit additional documents and if applicable, samples of the product(s). In addition, you must ensure continuous monitoring of the product quality so that it meets the required standards. This is necessary to pass the tests that the Dubai Municipality may conduct.
